    Hello --

I think I went overboard in installing spyware defenses.
Approx every 5 "squares" in Windows Task Manager > Performance
the CPU Usage spikes to 100%, and the system overall is slow.

Can anyone see what might be the problem from the HijackThis scan below?

Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

According to your HJT log you are running:
    Sophos antivirus
    AVG antivirus
    Windows Defender
    eTrust Internet Security
    Spyware Doctor

Plus a whole load of other tools and toys that are not virus or
    spyware related.

It is a wonder that your CPU usage ever drops below 100%

I would not be surprised if this computer took a week and half in
    order to boot up.

Decide on one antivirus program and one antispyware program to be
loaded and run at startup and maintained automatically. Reconfigure
the others to only run when you manually launch them and train
yourself to manually update them every time you do launch them (which
should be about once a week for "second opinion" scans of the
    computer.

    Good luck
