Can anybody briefly explain the relationship between contrast and
saturation ? How are these two terms defined mathematically ?

Whenever I have an image with lots of dynamic range, during RAW
conversion I reduce the contrast level to accomodate the extra dynamic
range, and then boost the saturation to put more "life" into the image
(to make it look less flat). This is because there are basically two
ways to put life into an image - either boost the contrast or the
    saturation.

You got it right. The other way to look at it is if you increase
contrast, that often makes the image too saturated so a saturation
decrease helps make it look more normal.
