Complete updates for W98SE?

Discussion in 'Computer Support' started by Geoff Pearson, Aug 6, 2006.

  1. I seem to think there was a place from which one could download all the
W98SE updates to burn to a CD - where might that be?

Are you referring to the unofficial win98 service pack?

You seem to think? What the hell does that even mean? You either had the
thought, or you didn't. One cannot *seem* to think, anything. Think about
    it. :)

    Probably so, yes.

    > where might that be?

It *might* be anywhere. But the first place I'd look, is on the Microsoft
website. And that failing, I'd try Google.

Microsoft has ended it's support of Win98 so the MS website might not
be such a good place to look, but I agree completely with trying
Google. I'm sure there has to be something somewhere.

I did try Google - nothing - but I am sure I remember someone posting a link
to a Microsoft page with the whole lot available as one download. But I
can't find it. Hence braving you lot.

All Windows updates should be on the Microsoft Website.

You want the IE 6 SP1 (service pack) if you don't already have it:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx
    or the shorter url equivalent
    http://tinyurl.com/gvxs7

Here's the MS Download Center url for IE SP1:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en
    or http://tinyurl.com/6zjbm
    You shouldn't try Windows Update...it doesn't work consistently :)

MS will not be writing new patches for their 98/ME OS. They still have
software. If the urls above or given by others don't work for you you
    can order a IE 6 SP1 CD for $5:

https://om.one.microsoft.com/opa/ but it's best to get at the CD
ordering page by following the link in the earlier page:
    http://tinyurl.com/gvxs7

Here is some extended reading on security issues once you get installed.
There are also some tips about what security apps work. The problem with
no more updates to Win98 is no more security patches from MS.

    http://tinyurl.com/o42t2

Tis describes the IE 6 SP1 upgrade wrt the security discussion above.
