Cat4003 probs with 1000bT GBIC

Discussion in 'Cisco' started by Hoosier Daddy, May 24, 2004.

  1. I am attempting to install a 1000bT GBIC module (MODEL WS-G5483) in a
Cat4003. I am using the GBIC slots on the WS-X4232-L3. This module
appears on the hardware compatibility list, the only caveat being that
CatOS 7.2 or greater be running.

The GBIC is not being recognized, and I have a couple concerns:
    First, the error messages:

    2004 May 24 13:40:28 %SYS-4-P2_WARN: 1/Tag 101 on packet from
    00:02:4b:93:f6:09
port 2/1, but port's native vlan is 1
    2004 May 24 13:42:22 %SYS-4-P2_WARN: 1/Tag 102 on packet from
    00:02:4b:93:f6:0a
port 2/2, but port's native vlan is 1

I looked them up on Cisco's site and it eluded to a misconfiguration
of 802.1Q trunks. So, I did the all-powerful "clear config all" (not
in production yet) and still got the errors. The only connection to
the 4003 was my console rollover cable - no network activity. These
messages were occuring BEFORE I tried to install the GBIC.

My next concern is if I have a viable version of CatOS for a
Supervisor I engine. (I only have guest CCO status and can't seem to
get ANYWHERE on their site any more).

Thanks for any and all suggestions,

    Joe Q.

Here's the 411 on the software:

    Well, WS-X4232-L3 is running IOS - it's a layer 3 module for Catalyst 4000
switches. Two GigE ports on front panel of this module is router ports, not
switch ports. So in order to use 1000T GBIC you need to find IOS for WS-X4232-L3
    which supports it.

Two GigE you can see in CatOS config is connection from L3 module to backplane.
There is a document on cisco.com with details.

    With best regards,
    Andrey.
