We tried without success, to transfer data from a laptop with win 98 to a PC
with XP pro.The laptop was on DSL and the XP was on cable using a router.

We plugged the laptop into the XP router but were unable to " connect " the
    two PC's.

The laptop now is reconnected to its DSL LAN but cannot get on line. We get
a fatal error message when using winipcfg on the laptop.

any advice please on how to reconnect the laptop to its DSL
    thanks
