If I change the properties of a folder by clearing the read-only box,
(which is grayed), when I view the folder again, the read-only boxed is
still checked. Many of the folders react this way. How can I get around
    this?

It's a standard feature of XP. It doesn't want you to change the
    read-only attribute for folders.
