I simultaneously subscribed to Rogers Cable three times, as well as
Sympatico, satellite and half a dozen dial-up services. As a result, I was
able to download the new Tom Cruise movie two months before they'd begun
    filming it.

    Your mileage may vary.

    Regards,
    Ian.

Not to the point of being worth anything. Far cheaper to upgrade to
    next speed with NTL.

Lets assume cable d/l speed of 3.0 Mb/sec, just for giggles....
Let's also assume modem speed of 50 Kb/sec, again, just for gigles...

    50,000 b/sec / 3,000,000 b/sec = 0.016666....

The advantage of adding so little speed doesn't seem worth it to me -
not to mention the overhead of "bonding" the chnls into one stream.

How can you do that? I mean you can probably put in various broadband
services using the ports on the pc but how do you combine several dial-up
    services?

Yeah, well I'm on the maximum with ntl. They've got 3 speeds and my
downloads really were faster with the slowest one. I'm not sure whether that
just coincided with a problem with the Kazaa or whether the slowest really
is the fastest (doesn't make sense!!). I'm calling ntl tomorrow to downgrade
as 1? it's really not worth it and 2/ I may get lucky with the speeds again!

It's okay, Kendra. I was just having a bit of fun. I understand your
desire for more speed- we all share that need for speed whether we are on
dial-up or broadband. Somehow, "fast" is never fast enough, is it?

For the record, I currently use a version of KazaaLite as my p2p program of
choice. My download speeds are limited by the connection speed of the
people I download files from, in spite of the fact that I have a cable
connection. And beyond that, it seems that Sharman (the folks who own
Kazaa) are currently on a mission to eliminate all versions of KazaaLite
from their network. When I am ultimately blocked from their FastTrack
Network, I will miss it. But after that time, I will happily just continue
to download music from the binaries newsgroups, which have always been my
fastest-downloading source of files. You'll no doubt experience the same
    thing.

And as an aside, that new Tom Cruise movie IS currently available in the
binaries newsgroups. But I don't think I'll bother downloading it. It
sounds too much like a vehicle for the movie star, rather than a quality
    movie.

    Regards,
    Ian.

Thank you Ian. It's actually really funny!
I guess I'll try the binary newsgroups then as kazaa is downloading at
speeds of less than 1kb/s! Shame about it

A less than 10% increase for the amount it'll cost you to run it isn't
worth it. NTL do varying speed services. Upgrade yours.

The speed you download is dependent on the other end. Also NTL suffered
when the transatlantic optical cable was damaged last week.
