"Insufficient disk space for bitlocker drive encryption to encrypt the
drive." The vista drive has 200g free space.
Anyone know why bitlocker is giving me this msg when I try to encrypt
    drive????

  2. Did you configure your system to have at least two partitions, with a small,
Active partition before the system partition? Setting up BitLocker requires
properly configuring your disk before you can encrypt your system partition.

    Kue2:
I agree with Charlie, proper configuration is necessary. "Windows
BitLocker Drive Encryption Step-by-Step Guide" is located at
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905089.aspx. Follow
scenario 1 & 2 or 1 & 3 depending on your system configuration. In scenario
1 when setting up the system partition it has to be at least 1.5GB, setting
it up at 1.6GB or 1.7GB gives you a net of at least 1.5GB (scenario 1 step
    10).

  4. Hello,
Did we ever get a disk configuration from this system?
Did we ever get a resolution?
    Thanks,

  5. Not that I'm aware of, Darrell. User didn't come back, so I'm assuming that

    Hi Darrell!!
    Happy New Year!
I think Charlie hit the nail on the head,I forgot to partition a small
partition for bitlocker When I am able to buy vista ultimate(Feb) I'll
repartition disk before the clean install. (2gigbitlocker)- then (vista
    partition)
As i understand it now the small partition-(2 gig) has to be before the
    vista partition?
Another Question how many primary partition can you have /per drive.I have 2
drives installed. One with XPpro 64 & the other with Vista 64 & Xp home.

    Hi Charlie!
Yes you hit the nail on the head.Sorry I didn't get back to you. After I
read your reply I put a 2 gig partition in front of my vista partition using
Acronis disk director. This worked fine until I tried to boot into Vista.
After using the install disk to fix the boot path the sign on screen came up
fine but when I signed on the desktop would not draw. I had a desktop no
background no icons & no taskbar all I could do was bring up the task
    manager.
I had to delete the 2gig partition & put the Vista partition back to it's
original size before I could restore 5744 using an previously created image
file using Acronis true image. LOL was another learning experience that
turned out fine in the end thanks to Acronis's software.LOL always finding
ways to break things that aren't broke.........sure like muckin about with
    these beta's....

You can create up to 4 primary partitions. If you need more partitions,
then 3 primary and an extended partition where you can create multiple
    logical drives.

  9. Hello,
It should be after the Vista partition. Each drive can have 4 primary
    parititions.
The Error message is confusing me somewhat, Do you have a hidden OEM
partition on that disk by chance?
I suspected a different problem with that error message.
    Thanks,
    Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

  11. Hello,
It shouldn't be, but the error message wasn't looking right for a
configuration without a couple of volumes.
I have run Bitlocker on a machine with an OEM partition hidden partition
and it wasn't an issue, I had a different issue but it wasn't a Bitlocker
    issue.
However I created my Bitlocker configuration before running setup, I didn't
try with only the OEM hidden partition and one other Volume.
So I think Bitlocker saw two volumes and that there wasn't enough space on
the OEM hidden volume thus the error message.
With an incorrect disk configuration ( seeing one volume only) I would have
    expected this error messge:
"The drive configuration is unsuitable for BitLocker Drive Encryption. To
use BitLocker, please re-partition your hard drive according to the
    BitLocker requirements. "
    Rather than what you saw:
"Insufficient disk space for bitlocker drive encryption to encrypt the
    drive."

Thus I am wondering whether we are seeing the OEM hidden volume and since
it's not large enough generating your error message.
    Thanks,
    Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I'll try again. I'll resize my Vista partition & put a small partition after
the vista Partition & see if I can install Bitlocker.
I'll see what happens, thanks for your time & replies.

    Darrell:
I've found that following the "Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption
    Step-by-Step Guide" located at
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905089.aspx works. In the
text the system partition has to be at least 1.5GB but in scenario 1 step 10
the system partition is only setup at 1.5GB, using 1.6GB in step 10 allows
BitLocker to encrypt the drive. My first setup I followed the guide exactly
setting the system drive to 1.5GB, BitLocker works by hiding the Vista
partition from XP but the drive isn't encrypted. I would format that system
and re-install Vista to verify that I only made one mistake but the system
is fully functional and I only have a limited number of activations on my
volume license. Have a great day.
