Are there any free utilities to recover an accidentally deleted photo from a SmartMedia card?

    Hi there,

    I've got a Fuji FinePix F601 Zoom and I accidentally deleted a photo. I
would like to recover it, and it's about 1mb in size. I've not taken any
photos since I deleted it, so I know this is possible, but I would like some
suggestions for a *free* utility that I can try? I did try a utility that
came on a magazine coverdisc, but this only recovered files up to about
500kb - so although it could see my picture, I had to pay for the licenses
to recover it, and I'd like to try all the free utilities first.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks for any help.

    Regards,

    Stephen

You'll need a card reader though, unless the PC sees the camera as a drive
    in it's own right

Hi Maze, thanks for the download link. I have downloaded it and tried it,
but with no luck I'm afraid. :-( The only files that it recovers are the
    pictures that I never deleted.

Thanks for your help, it was worth a go.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

Hi Maze, no worried as the PC sees the camera as a drive when it is turned
on, so the software searched through that.

    Thanks,

The last freeware version of Digital Image Recovery
    http://www.foto-erhardt.de/modules.php?name=Downloads

Only for use with a card reader or when your camera is seen by your
    computer.
After finishing your rescue operation always format the card in your camera.

Hi Marius, thanks for your post. I have just tried this software as it's
the same one that Maze posted. Unfortunately, it didn't work. :-( Maybe
the images are just lost! :-(

    Thanks for your help,

    Stephen

Use Digital Image Recovery via a card reader (which every digicam owner
should have anyway). Your camera firmware is interfering.

Try www.RecoverMyFiles.com . It costs but the trial version will let you see
if your photo is there to be recovered.

Accidentally deleted photos in Fuji Cameras & how to prevent this.

    Hi,

I'm not sure it's possible if the file has been deliberately deleted in the
Fuji cameras - but your F601 may erase files differently to the 6900Z I
    have.

I used a trial version of Winhex to search through a memory card that
contained a single picture and could find the jpg header and footer hex
codes, with associated data inbetween. I then erased the picture in the
camera (not format) and viewed the contents of the card to find everything
(apart from card formatting info) had been replaced with hex 00 (ie the
whole image had been wiped and was therefore unrecoverable). No recovery
program available would be able to recover the images as there's nothing now
    on the card to recover.

However, if the card contains damaged jpgs, then there is a chance of
recovering images as the data is still there, but erasing in camera causes
    the images to completely disappear.

Is this the same for other Fuji cameras?

*** The best way of preventing accidental deletion (esp when showing friends
your images in the camera) is to "protect" the image - see the manual for
    more details. ***

    Cheers,

I just successfully used the link below (Free) to retrive images that
would not download from my 256mb xD card to camera. This program
retieved all plus all the deleted images too.
