Any updates with DVDPlanet?

Discussion in 'DVD Video' started by Frank Malczewski, Jun 28, 2003.

  1. As of a couple of days ago it was impossible to get through to them via
phone. It has been impossible to get through to them via email.

My order from June 1st never got processed. My subsequent
we're-so-sorry-$5-off order on the 14th never got processed either. My
cancellation email for these orders still has not been acknowledged.

And still their website acts like nothing is wrong, they keep sending
    upcoming title emails. Etc etc.

The lights are on but nobody's home?

Is there maybe some alternate universe where dvdplanet is actually all
back to normal and people are getting their orders?

I haven't yet received any of my new releases for this week (_I
Fidanzati_, _Ali: Fear Eats the Soul_, _Il Posto_, _Hiroshima Mon
Amour_, _Night and Fog_) from DVDPlanet, nor did I receive _by
Brakhage_ in the week of 10 June (did this actually come out?).

Haven't yet written to complain, though in the light of your post maybe
it's time to do so. I can't raise them on the telephone either: I
either get a busy signal or get put in the customer-service queue, at
the end of which I get... a busy signal. Bad sign.

I do hope we're not seeing another DVD Express-type meltdown here. It
was painful enough going through that the first time.

By Brakhage is definitely out -- I have a copy, and I've seen it in
    the B&Ms in Toronto.

    From Video Business:

IMAGE DIPS INTO THE RED IN ITS FOURTH QUARTER
Margins, tax provisions, DVDPlanet business hamper supplier.
    By Daniel Frankel 6/27/2003

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----

JUNE 27 | DVD supplier Image Entertainment on Friday reported a net loss of
$318,000 for its fiscal fourth quarter compared to net earnings of $552,000
for the same period last year.

For the year, the company lost $4.2 million compared to $195,000 last year.
Image officials attributed the loss in part to income tax provisions that
paired unfavorably to tax credits for the fourth quarter of last year.

Net revenue grew 1% in the quarter ended March 31 to $27 million; for the
year, the gain was 14.1 % to $108.2 million.

"The loss was not determined by revenue, but by margins, which declined from
29.7% last year to 26.4% this [fiscal] year," Martin Greenwald, president
and CEO of Image, said during a conference call. "The cost of carrying
studio product has burdened our balance sheet by carrying lower-margin
inventory," he said, adding that Image will continue to move away from such
    titles.

Revenue at Image's DVDPlanet retail business rose 13.8%, but executives
conceded the operation is still losing money, hampered by "comparatively
weaker new releases and competition from rival Internet vendors."

Image is moving DVDPlanet to a third-party fulfillment center, iServe, in
Chicago--a move Greenwald said could save the division $800,000 a year.

"DVDPlanet is the black sheep in the family that we've got to bring back
    into the fold," he said.

Thanks for the confirmation, John: I haven't been in a B&M for *weeks*,
and it's always a question as to whether Criterion titles are going to
make their posted street dates. Didn't want to needlessly blame
DVDPlanet if Criterion pushed the disc back again.

They sent only 1 DVD from my 4 DVDs $5 off order, despite that all 4 DVDs
are in stock. They included full price of international shipping ($8) in
cost of this DVD, so they charged $15 DVD for $23. I didn't expected it will
be so high, because at previous orders, they included cost of shipping in
the whole batch, and DVD's prices weren't so expensive in total. I suppose
when they are going to process next DVD from my order, they will send it
with new batch and will include full price of shipping again. It was the
last time I ever ordered from them. Switched to amazon now.

  13. Yup, surprise, surprise. Today I got one of the 5 DVDs I placed in the
two orders (looks like from the 6/14 order). And, it came from the
same place that Deep Discount DVD ships out of in Illinois.

Never got an email or anything. The enclosed invoice did not even
indicate how much I was charged... And it has an 800 number on it that
doesn't look like their website one....oh, but when I dialed it it was
for Critic's Choice Video. What the hell? I feel like I'm in the
    f*cking Twilight Zone...

Anyway they're getting it back (as I've made other arrangements, plus,
it too was (slightly) damaged). Although I guess I'll wait for the
other four to show up first... so I don't waste too much return postage.

Now I understand why they upgraded their software....

Just a suggestion, but you might want to check out Deep Discount DVD.
I've had pretty good luck with them.

I've only ever ordered Criterions from DVDPlanet b/c they give 35%
off. Amazon gives about 25% off, i think. of course, shipping is
free and I'll actually GET the item. Hmm... maybe i'll switch to
    amazon, too.

Why should you pay postage to return damaged merchandise? It's up to
them to get the merchandise to you undamaged.

Was I really so obscure? My point was that if they ship damaged
merchandise, you ought to get a credit from them for the cost of
    shipping it back.

I would never do repeat business with a company that made me pay
extra shipping because they shipped bad product.

  20. Follow-up to my earlier post: I received my pre-orders for 24 June in
the post today. They still do not appear as "shipped" on my account's
    "Order Status" page.

My pre-order of _by Brakhage_ -- which came out 6/10/2003 and is listed
as "in stock" on the web site -- is still nowhere to be seen, and I've
still received no answer from DVD Planet Customer Service about this
title. So I'm only partly mollified: I'm actually grumpier about the
lack of communication than I am about the lateness of the orders.

If things don't shape up, DVD Planet is going to lose my pre-order
business: right now, I feel the savings aren't worth the hassle of
    dealing with them.
