Sometime in the latter half of 2003 a small group of people with either an
active or latent interest in robotics formed a mailing list and user
group. The initial membership arose from the CLUG (Christchurch Linux
users group) where the idea was first proposed.

The group also meets on a monthly basis for an exchange of ideas, show and
tell sessions and robot challenges (e.g. line following time trials).

If you have an interest in robotics please check out our mailing list at:
    http://www.rout.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/chchrobotics

If you are located in (or happen to be passing through) Christchurch you might
like to attend the next meeting, which is scheduled for the third week of
    January (date to be confirmed).

The focus is on building some form of autonomous (and generally mobile)
for any purpose whatsoever. Some people are building robots from scratch
others from kits (such as the Cybot from the Real Robot series) or perhaps using
prebuilt micro controller boards such as a Picaxe or Basic stamp.
Others haven't started and are coming along to meetings or lurking on the list for inspiration and ideas.

For examples on what some of the members are up to:
One of our members is building an autonomous 'linux powered car'
    http://www.cleancut.co.nz/linuxcar/index.html

he's probably too late to enter this US competition, which looks entertaining:

another member expressed an interest in building somthing like this:
    http://www.geology.smu.edu/~dpa-www/robo/nbot/

in the meantime he's putting together a vehicular (dog like) robot
with the stated intent to 'fetch him beers from the fridge'. It is already equipped
with GPS so it can tell where it is in the world and uses radio telemetry to
communicate with a base station (this was demonstrated at a meeting).

Another member has started work on a robotic lawn mower - yes there are
commercial versions of these available, but it's much more fun to build
    your own.

Check out the list archives for other activities and discussions.
