aftermarket batteries, are they safe to use?

    are they safe to use? i bought 2 cheap aftermarket batteries for my
    canon s50. during the charge, i would notice that red and green light
    alternates. this behavior, as far i know, doesn't occur when oem
    battery is being charged. also i notice that nominal voltage rating for
    the oem is 7.4v whereas the aftermarket one is 7.2 v. any cause for
    concern? has there been cases where after using aftermarket batteries,
    the camera became damaged?
