ADSL broadcast of serial number?

I've got ADSL connection and using Speedtouch 330 supplied by my ISP.
Using win98SE. Yesterday I found this in the registry:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB\EnableSerialNumberGeneration

Anyone idea what it means? Does it mean that the Speedtouch's serial
    number is being generated online?

You could have tried a well educated guess that this entry deals with
    USB devices in any way.
And you could have tried to find an answer using any search engine
(Yahoo, Google etc.) - there you will find
