Acer Ferrari 4005

Discussion in 'Windows 64bit' started by =?Utf-8?B?anc=?=, Jun 27, 2005.

  1. Has anyone upgraded an Acer Ferrari series laptop yet? I was surprised that
Acer hasn't done any testing yet.

  2. No, I'm still trying to figure out how to swing buying one. But I know
earlier models got x64 Edition installed, since I saw several at MS around
    the time of the launch.

  3. Probably just demo models...

I've seen this thing myself, if I could afford it, I'd definitely be
    buying. :)

The Acer UK website indicates that XP x64 is an option with the 4005,
    though there's no SKU given.

How would the 4005 compare against, say, this Compaq R4000 Presario (the
    A64 3500+ model):

    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/21675-38187-179483-179483-179483-12150926.html

The Presario is around 2/3 the price of the 4005 (at least in the UK), and
the specs appear to be broadly similar (though the Presario resolution is
a bit lower, and it ships with XP Home[!]).

  7. Hello Julian,
No those were released models. I bought on Acer Ferrai quite a bit earlier
this year from a retail store and installed Windows XP X64 edition on it.
It wasn't a 4500, I think it was the 3200 model. All I run on it is the
    Windows XP X64 edition.
    Thanks,

  8. My information here in North America is that it is currently only shipping
with 32-bit XP. And the Acer Technology Advancement Program site doesn't list
it as a supported swap. That all being said, I've been told that x64 Edition
is currently running on at least one developer's Ferrari 4000 box at Acer
without having to do much to get there.

It may be a while before I actually plop down the necessary cash to buy one,
but I can tell already that it _will_ happen. The cool factor is just too
    much.

How does it compare with the Presario? Well, the Presario comes with Home
Edition, for one. And has only the x200 chipset from ATI. Neither of those
excite me. You'd definitely want to go with the upper of the two Presarios to
get the bigger HD and 2x512Mb of RAM. But lets face it -- the cool factor is
all in favour of the Acer Ferrari. :)

The 3200+ Presario is not under consideration, only the 3500+.

If the Ferrari was running an X2, there'd be no contest, but as it is... a
~$750 difference in price makes the Ferrari difficult to justify, even to
    myself.

I don't play games much, so I'd be surprised if I noticed any difference
between graphics cards (I work on all sorts of machines now, often via RDP
and can rarely tell any appreciable difference).

Both machines fill the available memory slots to get to 1Gb - I'd really
much rather have 1x1Gb than 2x512Mb, so I could easily increase the RAM to
2Gb without having to discard any RAM.

The higher resolution of 1680x1050 of the Ferrari would be *very* nice
though - mind you, I'd probably have to visit the optician and ask for
stronger glasses <g>. Still, the 1280x800 of the Presario would be up on
the 1024x768 I currently have on my Athlon 1600 laptop (stop laughing!).

Don't really care what OS is on it - can obtain an XP x64 licence without
    too much trouble.

  11. Hello Charlie,
Well score is probably not the right word. This is my personal laptop, so

It gets a lot of comments going through the airport when I have to take it

  20. =?Utf-8?B?anc=?=

    Barb Bowman Guest

getting ready (in the next week or so) to install XP64 on the other
partition. it comes with 2 x 45 gig partitions (and a hidden recovery
one). acer supplied physical recovery media too.

the machine ships as fat32 so the first thing i did was convert to
    NTFS

I've been running it for a few days with 32 bit XP just to get
familiar with the hardware buttons etc. (else how would i know what to
    expect on XP64).

what's really nice is that Acer doesn't crap it up with pre-installed
    AOL, etc. etc.

(and I am not despicable!) ;-)
