access denied to my own local settings folders?

Discussion in 'Computer Support' started by mentalguy2004, Sep 9, 2004.

  1. Hi,

Running XP Home, SP2. Whenever I run an app that uses the C:\Documents and
    Settings\[account]\Local Settings folder, or similarly I double-click a .exe
within a WinZip archive, I get the error message ""Windows cannot access the
specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions
    to access the item".

I am using the only account set up on this PC, it is an admin account, and I
can browse to this temp folder no problem (and to all the "all users"
folders), but it won't let me run anything inside it. If I copy the .exe
files to the desktop or other folder, they work fine until they need to
    read/write something from my C:\Documents and Settings\[account]\Local
Settings folder, and I get the error message again. this means I can't
install Norton, or any other apps which decompress themselves into this
folder. I know I can decompress them to a different folder, but I'd like to
sort this problem out, as a lot of progs don't give the choice. MS knowledge
    base was no help.

    Anyone?? Thanks!

If the HD is using NTFS, then it could be that the User Account you're using
(even with Admin rights) doesn't have *Write* permission on the directory
in question. Did you check that out?

I run MS XP Pro and SuSE Linux Pro and I like both of them.
