“Military-Grade†Hardware

  1. While rereading Jason Perlow’s series commemorating the Apollo space
    program, I came across this sales brochure for the Univac 1230 “Military
    Computerâ€
    <http://content.zdnet.com/2346-17924_22-319868-11.html?tag=content;col1>.
    Note it boasts an MTBF of “1500 hours†(measured from a sample of units
    actually running).

    That’s about two months. I think today’s consumer-grade PC hardware can
    manage that without too much trouble—if it’s running the right operating
    system...
