Title : OCZ Rally Flash Drive
Author : Nathan Rossi
Date : 25-10-2005

Introduction

OCZ are a name you heard very often when it comes to ram or power supplies. But today OCZ have a new device, one of high speed for such a small piece of equipment. Today we are here to witness the OCZ Rally, the Rally is a high speed flash drive.

Packaging

For me the Rally came bubble wrapped and in a plastic packet.

The Rally

The OCZ Rally is very small and compact, with it's aluminium case it can take a everyday beating. Unlike other flash drives, the Rally comes with a lifetime warranty.

The Rally comes with a few extras, one is the neck cord and the other is the keyring.

The Dual Channel Technology

OCZ have seen a possibility to put the powerful and speedy Dual Channel idea into a Flash Device. It works very similar to the Dual Channel Technology in RAM, it uses two controllers to read from the flash memory. This can add up to 2x the speed of a single controller.

Thanks to Hardware Secrets we can have a look what's under the casing.

Test Setup

Testing

Testing was done with the above machine.

HDTach 3.0.1 and SiSoft Sandra 2005 were used for speed measurements.

Drive Speed Comparison:

  • OCZ Rally (512mb)
  • Corsair Voyager Flash Drive (128mb)

Results

The Dual Channel Array really makes a mark in speed.

You can see here how the dual channel effects the Access time, because of the two Flash ROM controllers it require them to both respond, and they are unlikely able to respond at the same time.

Conclusion

The OCZ rally is really one awesome flash drive. With Aluminium casing and both key ring and neck chain it really does show off.

With high speeds of 28mb/s which is approximately 10mb/s off IDE HDD Speed's it could be used as a HDD.

The Rally is a very small flash drive and it can be used for everything. If i were to get a new flash drive I would certainly get a Rally.

Flash ROM really has moved the past few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being used for HDD's in the near future.
