The memory effect does exist in NiCds, but has been grossly exaggerated. Inpractice one is unlikely to encounter it, and advice such as discharge before recharge was just a way to sell junk products.

The OP forgot to mention what battery chemistry they were using, so who knows. It might be any of more than one version of lithium, NiCd, NiMh, LSD NiMh, NiZn, or even rechargeable alkaline. The ones with high self discharge are some types of NiMH, generally the ones not sold as ready charged.

Don't forget that self discharge is not the only factor. For example a 2.7Ah NiMH that's lost half its charge will still outperform a 0.8Ah NiCd that's lost 15%.
