dropping links in browser window changes window.location; how to disable?

In all graphical browsers I know, if you drag and drop a link anywhere
in a window, or even text that looks like a link, the browser tries to
navigate to that link. Is it possible to disable that behavior?

In IE, I can add non-standard event handlers, ondragover and ondrop,
that cancel the default action. Is there a way to do this in Mozilla?

Elections only count as free and trials as fair if you can lose money
betting on the outcome.
