Perl and connection via a proxy?

Hello,

I'm trying to install and use Mail-Check-User to be able to check a
valit email-adress but i'm behind a proxy. How do i use a proxy (login)
within a perl script. On my linux box i'm able to ping because if setup
a /etc/sysconfig/proxy file but how does it work in perl?
