I'm using a tablet - yep, it has short battery life. But Kindle for PC?
- I just gave up! The interface is *awful* and I never got the
registration to work (run a firewall - but couldn't be bothered trying
to find out what I need to do). Why can't they use https? Jesus!

Anyway, I've found Calibre - this an *awesome* reader - multiple formats
supported, powerful function set (way better than Kindle for PC) - yet
the most important functions are exposed simply and beautifully.

You don't even need your computer, Woger. It isn't helping you one
bit.

I'd read for a couple of hours at a time on a rainy day or evening -
but I don't think I could do that with any kind of LCD.

No, Woger, it has not been replaced. It is still a current model. If
you were paying attention you would realise that the touch as an e-ink
display which is better for long reading and the fire has an LCD which
is no good for long reading periods, and also has short battery lofe
compared to the touch.

In fact, Amazon are still selling the kindle 3 which is now sold as
'kindle keyboard' at a higher price than the kindle 4 and the kindle
touch.

Then there's the kindle dx wich is, iirc, larger but also works on e-ink
for people whose eyes aren't really 'up to scratch any more'. I can do
without holding the extra weight ... I'd rather wear reading glasses.

The kindle fire is/was not in competition with any of these, as you
said. More of an ipad knockoff.

Roger's showing yet again that he's talking out of his arse, I'm afraid.
What's new.

Try it. You may change your mind. I love mine. Paper books now seem awkward.

Cheers,
