know myself, since I was trying to set up myreader to do the above, to
no avail.

I have threads on and messages set to unread, but I still see all the
other **** that I already read a month ago -- massive thread trees!

What do I have to do -- switch to Eudora to get it set up the way I want?

There's no quoted material above so I'll guess. Try using View -
Messages (Threaded and All) and View - Threads - Threads with unread.
