It's just a matter of picking the right programs to watch.
(Prime is about the best of the free channels.)
But you could say the same about choosing library books.

TV needs to attract the sort of viewers who can be influenced by
advertising, and who will dumbly watch the screen during the many ad breaks.
If all the programs were for the more intelligent, the advertisers would
soon complain of falling sales.
And even the dumbest illiterate person has the same right to entertainment
as the rest of us.

And not only you.

From a viewer/programming perspective the question must surely be,
"What strategic and unique cultural asset would New Zealanders be
deprived of if TV1 and TV2 were shut down at mid-day today?"

While you may well be right, a cursory look at TV1 and TV2 schedules
suggests that the dumb and illiterate mouthbreathers are being way
over-indulged. Their ever-increasing slump-gut obesity only confirms
it

As Roy Thompson put it circa 50 years ago, a TV franchise is a licence
to print money.

And while it is true that the National Party has trashed fre to air
and public service television, the real mess goes back over successive
Government who have meddled in public television and created a total
shambles.

I have never understood why so-called public television and free to
air television are managed across at least three State funded
operators - perfect environment for poor purchasing decisions across
all aspects of free to air and public television..

The Labour Government could have taken regional television, Television
New Zealand, Maori Television and Parliament TV and brought them into
a proper public television service which had as one of its
requirements the management of a digital platform. The environment
for a profit making provider like Sky Television is perfect, picking
off weak and fragmented other operators.

Look also for the eventual demise of TV3 with the rise in dominance of
TVNZ alongside Sky.

The Government certainly has a lot of respect for how Sky operates -
more like Sky is taking over New Zealand television and directing the
Government on how to manage things.

and they are required to pay us a dividend, maximised by purchasing
crap programming and pandering to adevertisers.

Prefer to not have taxes funding TVNZ. At least I can chose to
purchase Sky services and pull the plug on the subscription.

and not my reality. Many of the so-called reality programmes are
extravagant commercials, dressed up as documentaries which are noteven
informative or of high quality.

Enjoy TVNZ7 while you can - it is to be repalced by a shopping channel
from 1 July this year.

TVNZ received taxpayer funding courtesy of the Labour Government and
one of the acts of the 2008-11 Government was to pull the plug.

Over the last two years I've picked channel OFF more than any other
channel. I now no longer watch TV at all (last watched TV probably Nov
last year). It's fantastic!
