It is not quite a museum. It is a disused station on a branch of the
Piccadilly Line of London Underground - a "Tube" station.
It is regularly used by makers of films and advertising videos in
order to avoid disrupting the normal daily operations of the London
Underground. A train can be operated in and out of the station
without affecting the rest of the Tube network. Think of it as a very
specialised film studio.
As with several areas of the Underground system that are particularly
interesting or historic, Aldwych station is very occasionally opened
to the public. This is one of those occasions, and it is open daily
for a period of two weeks. During that time, people who have booked
to see it can take a guided tour.
The ban on DSLRs is particularly crass, but I suspect that it was
imposed more out of concern for the intellectual property of the film
makers than for any other reason.
