Hi all,
I had been using a wifi net for my win2000 desktop, my winXP notebook, and my wireless printer for nearly 2 years w/o trouble. I had a Linksys WRT54G router with the desktop ethernetted to it. Then my desktop broke so I got a new Dell XPS 400 XP machine. I had a lot of trouble getting it online and finally bought a new WRT54G and finally got internet for the desktop. Now I can't get the winXP notebook on the internet. The notebook sees the wifi net but can't access any sites. I used a passphrase when I setup the desktop encription and I copied the generated key to the notebook. (I'm using WEP64.) Can anyone give me advice? =?Utf-8?B?SmltNzg5?= |

Can anyone give me advice? Disable WEP. Does it all work? Can each machine ping the router? Can each machine ping, say, www.google.com? If so, re-enable encryption - WPA-PSK (not WEP) - and ensure thatthe encryption key is correctly entered, especially, if in ASCII or HEX format (don't mix the two)... __spc__ |

Thanks for the reply. I used the desktop to disable WEP on the router and
then disabled it on the notebook and restarted the notebook. I could ping the router and had internet. Then I re-enabled WEP on the router and network and it still worked. I don't undersand why but what the heck. I would like to use wpa but I'm not sure the notebook supports it. At least when I click Data Encription from the Properties window I only get Disable or WEP as options. Is there some special way to enable WPA? This is a Gateway notebook purchased in Dec 03 and maybe wpa wasn't available then.
