I have setup my laptop and AP with fixed IP.
AP is a Linksys WAP54G and the router is Linksys BEFSR41. IP is 192.168.1.2 which is below the DHCP range of the router, which starts at 192.168.1.100, where 3 other computer are connected. Connection from laptop to the internet works. But i cant access the AP by typing 192.168.1.2 in the browser. How comes please ? Kim Kim Schroeder |

They are only provided an IP to allow you to configure them. Most are expected to be configured while connected directly to a PC, on the same network (i.e. 192.168.x.x) without other network connections. After configuration they can be put in place and don't need the IP any longer. The reason you can't access your AP by using the same IP you used to configure it is probably due to the fact that your computer is NOW on a different network than your AP IP. You would have to put your PC back on the 192.168.x.x network to access your AP. (note: the "network mask" often determines if you are on the same network or not.) -Frank Frankster |

Hi
Hmm... Strange. Take a look what is the IP of the Laptop? Is it of the same subnet as the Router? Did you switch off the DHCP in the AP. If you want to have one cohesive Network you have to switch Off the DHCP on WAP, and let the Laptop get an IP from the Router's DHCP Server. :sun; "Frankster" <> wrote in message news:l7-dnfNzpvPMaf3eRVn-... > > "Kim Schroeder" <> wrote in message... > >I have setup my laptop and AP with fixed IP. > > AP is a Linksys WAP54G and the router is Linksys BEFSR41. > > > > IP is 192.168.1.2 which is below the DHCP range of the router, > > which starts at 192.168.1.100, where 3 other computer are connected. > > > > Connection from laptop to the internet works. > > > > But i cant access the AP by typing 192.168.1.2 in the browser. > > How comes please ? > > > > Kim > > APs, specifically, do not need an IP to function. Both the Router and the AP is on the same subnet 255.255.255.0 Do i really have to reset the AP back to factorysettings to be able to access it again ? Kim Kim Schroeder |

Hi
Both AP and Laptop are 192.168.1.2 ? You can not have two IPs with same number change the Laptop to something else in the same subnet. Jack (MVP-Networking). You can either change the PC to be on the APs network or change the AP to be on the computers network. At first, of course, in order to change to AP to anything, you'll have to access it with a computer on the same network as the AP. I read in another post of yours that your laptop and your AP are configured to use the same IP, exactly. You can't do that. Each and every IP on the network must be unique. The only reason your network is working with that config is that the AP doesn't need an IP at all to do its normal job. As suggested by Jack, change one of them to something else on the same network. -Frank Frankster |

Found out that i can (still) access the AP with an IP given by the Routers DHCP (192.168.1.10X). I was not aware that it is only the Laptop that was given a fixed IP. Well, you learn everyday - thanks for your reply. Kim Kim Schroeder |

Thanks for your kind help - i wasnt aware that only the Laptop has fixed IP, and that the AP still get its IP from the Routers DHCP. I can access it now at 192.168.1.10X depending on the DHCP.
