Cell padding in datagrid

I have a datagrid which resided in a panel on a page
I want to change the cellpadding of the datagrid so that
the first column has a few leading spaces
Somehow changing the cellpadding of the datagrid doesnt seem to affect
any of the columns
Can anyone tell me what's the problem
I tried to change the cellpadding properties of the underlying table
but nothing seems to work
