Calling Javascript from Requiredfield Validator

Is it possible to call a javascript function when
validation on a requiredfield validator control fails?
I have a need to change the color of a label when there is
no data in a textbox. I tried using customvalidator but it
would not invoke the client side function if the textbox
content is null.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
