Refine data displayed in datagrid

On an .aspx page, we are displaying a dataset (based on a SQL 2000 query) in
a datagrid. We want to offer the visitor a chance to refine the results
displayed in the grid by selecting desired criteria from several controls -
checkboxes, dropdowns, etc. - that are on the same page, but outside the
grid. I'm sure it's very easy. Can someone point me to a tutorial or
example of how to do this?
