Gif Tranparency problems on LinkButton in Datagrid

When I use an image in linkbutton in a template column in a datagrid,
when an item is selected the transparency of this image is ignored,
and converted to the colour white. This is causing problems in terms
of the look of the site.
But for some reason in a similar situation using an EditCommandColumn
the transparency work fine.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem?
