This is the easiest way:
Convert all columns into BoundColumns and turn AutoGenerateColumns off.
This creates an EditItemTemplate for each column. There you can set the
width.
You can use the Property Builder, or you can use the following code:
<asp:Textbox style="width:40px" ....>
