Thanks mate. I've just started the download, will go watch another episode
of Sons of Anarchy and then have a go at putting it onto a bootable USB. It
should have downloaded by then.

(I made a bootable USB with the HP tool that EMB linked to, then copied all
of the files from an UBCD from 2007 that I have here but, although the PC
would boot to the C:\ prompt I couldn't find a way to make the normal menu
for UBCD come up. Perhaps I'll do better with Hiren's.)

Cheers,

Just a quick note, got Hiren's working well from USB by following links to
'USB booting' from the download page. The only problem I had was shrinking
the Hiren's bootable partition (using Acronis Disk Director) and trying to
make another partition. (Hiren's is 402MB as-is, much less than the 4GB
stick which is physically the smallest and most portable I have.)

I'd shrink the Hiren's partition down and leave 3GB unused and it still
worked perfectly. However when I made the second partition XP refused to
give it a letter, saying that it hadn't been.... (Damn, didn't note the
wording and my pain meds mean my memory ain't great.) .... initialised? That
wasn't the word but it had a similar meaning. Said I needed to re-boot. It
didn't work and, after an hour or so trying different things I gave up. Now
I just use a folder on the Hiren's partition for other things that I want on
the stick.

Thanks for the help all. Hiren's isn't exactly intuative so I'll have to
mess with it (or read?) for a while or I'll look like a prat when I need to
use it in anger. I've wondered if I should learn how to modify it as the
tools to do so were included in the download package....

I hope everyone has a great weekend.
