I don't suppose anyone has one lying around that they don't want an arm and
a leg for? My latest toy (hey, some people drink, some ski, others hunt...)
is an old IBM X24 laptop (PIII Tualatin 1.066GHz CPU with 512KB Cache on
133MHz FSB) without a lid. Most other bits were missing too but I've got it
up and running now. Problem is it struggles a bit running XP on the ram I
have.

It comes with a single slot as well as some RAM, either 128MB or 256MB,
soldered on-board. Unfortunately mine's got 128MB soldered and my biggest
SDRAM SODIMM is 256MB. As this is a tiny laptop that uses very little
electricity, and it runs a USB2 PC Card just fine I'd like to try using it
as the 'hub' for my home security system, writing video to an external
drive. However the software operates like a crippled dog. The CPU seems to
be in-spec (1GHz or better) but the recommended RAM is 1GB.

As this is a 'project' and I don't really have enough money to afford a
hobby I can't throw a lot of money at it (as it'll still be under the 1GB
mark with a 512MB SODIMM).

I just thought it might be worth a try asking here. It's a neat little
machine and it'd be a shame to not use it.

Not quite what you're after, but...

I've found a Hynix 512MB PC2-5300 SODIMM lying about (would've come
out of an iMac or another Thinkpad), but we've shifted offices
recently and it could take a bit longer to rummage around to find the
other old 'spares'.

No promises, but if you're not in a rush I might be able to turn
something more compatible up later on.

Thanks again. I seriously dislike disposing of 'obsolete' hardware when it's
usable but for the want of an upgrade or two. The more computers kept out of
landfills the better IMO.

Are these 144 pin bars?

Have you got more than that one?

I am definitely interested in 2 so that my
faithful Thinkpad A30 can digest all
the modern bloatware I feed her with.

I have a box with a growing collection of unwanted old RAM. Can you
clarify exactly what speed of RAM you need? I might have one.

Judging from the description of the CPU and FSB, I'm guessing you want
something around PC133 or DDR266 (PC-2100)?

Having a hunt through the box, my oldest spare 512 MB SODIMM is a
PC2-5300 (DDR2-667). I have some 256 MB in DDR at various speeds and one
PC133.

I also have a couple of dead laptops I've been holding onto for spare
parts, and they might have functioning RAM of about what you want.

We will probably keep those DDR2-667 SODIMMs around a little longer,
as some of our still working Thinkpads use that. But I think the A30
takes older PC133 (like what misfit is looking for), so they wouldn't
work in an A30 anyway.

PC133 SDRAM. However, thanks to the generosity of another poster it looks
like I'll have a 512MB stick on the way soon.

However, that said, my hobby, the thing that keeps me from going over the
brink, is tinkering with older laptops so any unwanted RAM would be
greatfully appreciated. A lot of these older machines are actually quite
capable once they're given enough RAM.

(I'd 'work' with newer machines more but don't have the money to spend. I've
given up smoking, drinking and socialising but still don't have much 'spare'
money for non-essential things.)

Honestly, not wanting to come across as a leech but anything that you have
that's surplus to requirements but that I might get some mileage out of
would be great. I can't afford to do much and it's hard to keep my brain
stimulated on my budget. Fixing up older laptops (and the rare desktop)
keeps me busy, it's something I enjoy.

If you have any bits and bobs that you don't want (especially laptop,
especially ThinkPad) that you think I could get some use from I'd appreciate
it (and would re-pay the favour anytime and anyway that I could). Gotta keep
the brain occupied....

If misfit is not interested, and you have two good 512 MB PC133 in 144
pin packaging, I am the taker.

You're right Anton, the A30 and the X24 both use the Tualatin PIII-M and
PC133 SODIMMs. The A30 is the full-size laptop and the X24 is the
ultra-portable.
