All these excuses about companies who have invested huge amounts in intranet
applications that only work with IE6 and would cost too much to migrate to a
standards-compliant browser are ultimately futile. What do you think you’ll
achieve by postponing such a migration? It’s not going to become any
cheaper.
Either IT is strategic to your company, or it isn’t. If it isn’t, then
there’s no big deal to the migration. If it is, then you’ll notice it’s
becoming harder and harder (i.e. more and more expensive) to interoperate
with the rest of the world as it becomes more standards-compliant. You made
a decision to buy into proprietary technology, and like all such decisions,
it has eventually come back to bite you in the bum.
Companies tied into obsolete proprietary technologies are going to go bust,
and I think the cobwebs are going to be cleared out that way.
