I have TBird and find it a nuisance - it doesn't mark groups as read when
I've finished with them.

But I did like OE. Sad I know, but there it is.

tried all that - it said I didn't have Live Mail apps to remove - even
though I am using two right now.

'tried all that' is ambiguous. Please do not bottom post untrimmed.
Instead, after you hit reply, delete all lines to which you are not
going to directly reply and then place additional remarks *after* the
line you are remarking on

How to uninstall Windows Live Essentials

b)In Windows Vista or Windows 7, Click Start and type appwiz.cpl on
the Search text box and then hit Enter
c)Type appwiz.cpl then press Enter to open Programs and Features in
Control Panel
d)Look for Windows Live Essentials and click on Uninstall/Change
e)Select the option Remove one or more Windows Live programs (see
left picture)
f)Select the product(s) you want to uninstall and click on Uninstall
(see right picture)
Note: If you select all products Windows Live Essentials will be
uninstalled
g)Follow the Onscreen instructions

In case Windows Live Essentials is not listed in Programs and Features
window or it is listed but the dialog box (left picture) after a double
click on Windows Live Essentials does not appear you can remove
Essentials manually by following these steps:

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, Click Start and type
%programfiles%\Windows Live\Installer on the Search text box and then
hit Enter
b)Double click on wlarp.exe and select the option Remove one or more
Windows Live programs (see left picture)
c)Select the product(s) you want to uninstall and click on Uninstall
(see right picture)

Note: If you select all products Windows Live Essentials will be uninstalled

d)Follow the Onscreen instructions

I was going to say using a MS app for the Usenet is even worse
than using one for email, but I managed to restrain myself.

Alas, not for long.

OK, indulge me.

Go here:

http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=436

and DL the app.

It needs no install, just unzip. When you unzip it (I suggest to
"News Xpress" in "Program Files" or wherever), and start it, it
will present you with some tabbed setup boxes. You will need to
know your Usenet provider's address etc.

Then DL the group list, and use the program for a few days.

Then post here and - hopefully - tell me that you will NEVER
EVER use Live Mail for ANYTHING again. (I can NOT imagine you
wanting to say ANYTHING else, but who knows.)

If you do binaries, do the same, but go to:

http://xnews.newsguy.com

If you like NX or XN, I'll tell you about a neat little POP mail
client.

Deal?

All real news readers work with all Usenet providers' servers.
Your specific ISP is irrelevant to everything but domain name
searching and **** email. Most ISP's do not provide Usenet
service anymore, let alone binaries, let alone acceptable.

I assumed it is dead, because I can't connect to it. I tried
several times (just now, again - nothing). Freewareweb seems
like a very good site, actually. There is nothing wrong with
using a decent software collection site.

Works fine here.
