Hi.
At home we have a wireless network connection and two laptops, one
with windows xp and one with windows 7. Recently we suddenly had some
network problems and lost the internet connection for some mysterious
reason. The wireless connection appears to be ok, but the connection
to internet is unavailable. In internet explorer, I clicked the button
to detect network problems that shows up when it can't establish a
connection to internet. Now comes the weird part. On the windows XP
computer, this method worked to solve the connection problems and the
internet connection was restored. On the windows 7 computer, it
somehow wasn't able to solve the problem with the internet connection.

Here is a screenshot of the method I've used from internet explorer to
solve the problem with the internet connection that worked on the
windows xp laptop and failed on the windows 7 laptop (it's a dutch
windows version, but I think the picture is fairly self-explanatory):

On the xp computer, where I was able to resolve the issue with the
internet connection, I've obtained log information (unfortunately most
of it is in dutch) and included that below at the end of this posting.

Does anyone know why the problem with the internet connection could be
resolved on the windows xp laptop but not on the windows 7 laptop?
Or perhaps someone knows of an alternative method that might work for
the windows 7 laptop to solve the problem with the internet
connection?

On the windows 7 laptop, the log regarding the failed attempt to
restore the internet connection was available as an 'etl' file, but I
have no idea how to open it to browse the contents.

I think the provider is AtHome. But somehow I was able to restore the
connection on the windows 7 computer. I think the trick was to
establish a new internet connection because there was somehow an error
in the old connection which prevented the computer from establishing
an internet connection.
Making a new connection, like via Iexplorer>internet
options>connections>create new connection, somehow probably got rid of
the error in the old connection.
Turning the wireless connection on/off somehow didn't work to resolve
this, but I still find it a bit mysterious that the automatic problem
solving option from internet explorer only worked under windows xp and
not under windows 7. Anyway, the problem is resolved now.
