What Will Kill Windows ...

.... will be the third-party software
It’s simultaneously Windows’ biggest asset, and also its biggest liability.
Only nowadays, it’s tilting more toward the latter:

These heap improvements are available to any third-party software that
uses the standard Windows heap. Most applications do just that... One
widely used application, however, does not: Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader
has its own heap system, ostensibly to provide greater performance, but
in so doing forfeits many of the security features built into the
platform heap.

And guess what? Adobe Reader is the single most-heavily-exploited piece of
Windows software right now. And then:

The easiest way for end users to patch Microsoft software is to enable
Microsoft Update.

Third-party applications unfortunately lack this kind of unified update
system. Though Microsoft does work with third-party vendors to notify
them of vulnerabilities and assist in remedying them, at present the
only third-party software distributed through the Windows
Update/Microsoft update system is driver software. Third-party
applications have no access to the infrastructure.

Windows users, it seems, rarely keep their software up-to-date, making it
much easier to exploit already-patched vulnerabilities.
