This computer has a Master Boot Record Security which records the MBR
in the BIOS and will not allow a replacement HD to be accessed.

Anyone familiar with this make and model suggest action to allow
replacemnt either the feature to be disbled or to allow replaced HDs
to be recognised?

Its just a bios option in the setup.

Also make sure you change it from bitshift to LBA in the HDD settings if
you want the drive to work anywhere else after formatting on the compaq
- stupid default they have on their machines is bitshift - I have no
idea what the hell it means, but nothing else does it so failing to
change it means you cant boot that drive in another machine.

Richard:

Tks for suggestion.

With a drive with an active partition installed, using the Save
MBR and Restore MBR achieved nothing.

I've search all BIOS options but cannot find one to amend
bitshift to LBA.

I'm getting a message 'Press any key for ROM options messages'
but nothings happening when I press a key — box just cycles at the
repeat the message

I've d/l'ed a copy of the HP System Bios 786B2 v1.10 from the HP
web site, but cannot identify any utility to flask the BIOS.

Its under the harddrive options. Will have a look later on my 530, its
