So the BBC is activating a feature that will lock out open-source Flash
players from accessing its iPlayer content

However:

Some open source plug-ins get around SWF verification by transparently
dropping the stream, reopening it and seeking to where it was before the
"ping" came in, though this is potentially punishing on servers.

In other words, this could end up hurting the BBC more than it does users of
open-source Flash players...

It appears open-source downloaders still work fine, only streaming clients
are blocked. Which is only going to push people into doing more downloads...
