It sure seems like this group is overrun with spam, a lot worse than
any of the other groups I use. How long has it been like this? It
really gets in the way of using Google Groups.

There are other news servers without spam.

Check out individual.net. Costs 10EUR a year, but I hardly see any spam
at all there. Very reliable, haven't had any problems with that service
in all the years I've been using it.

(required) and then access text-only newsgroups on the server
news.eternal-september.org for free.

Here's a description from the site:
