Vendors of hardware appliance-type gadgets don’t normally have their
customers expecting that the devices will have new capabilities added in
future firmware upgrades. Yet it appears this might be happening for phones
running Android <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/12/30/galaxy_android_2/>.
But then, given the open-source foundations of Android, does it really
matter if the original vendor won’t offer a later version of the OS for old
hardware? It could just leave that to a thriving third-party market.
