Labels on Recordable CDs ?

Can a sticker/label such as are put on video cassettes be put on one
side of a recordable DVD ? The volume of material I record makes putting
the information as to what's on the tape on a sleeve or in the format of
the recorded material impractical. Will the disc record and play with a
sticker on the side that is not encoded ? SD

I have done it with special label stock that is the size/shape of
the DVD. They came with a applicator jig to make centering
easier.

Dunno about anything else bco balance issues and maybe adhesive
issues.

It probably will, but the assymmetrical distribution of weight from a
rectangular label affixed to the surface of the disc is likely to cause
significant vibration at rotational speeds used in reading and writing.

Even if you use a "form fitting" label that is exactly the shape of the
disc, the added weight is enough to cause difficulty for some drives. Not
to mention the possibility of adhesive chemically affecting the disc below
(admittedly though this is probably not a real issue with DVD's as they
are constructed differently from CD's).

Almost every problematic third-party disc I've run across (or had a friend
or family member ask me to help with) has had a label plastered on top. I
think that if one is burning stuff for archival purposes, the risk of
problems because of an affixed label is simply too high. Your mileage may
vary, but I have learned to play it safe.

thank you , I had not considered weight/asymmetry problems SD

Only the top side, not the side that faces down when you place it in
the drive, and ONLY a symmetrical label that does not make for an
imbalanced spin of the disc.

Bullshit.

Only if you try to remove the label can the adhesive pull off the thin,
vulnerable top side coating, and do damage to the underlying "bit foil"
layer where the data is on a bought CD. A recordable CD also has a
specific construction, but a label should only be applied once, so this
should never be a problem for anyone, short of a monkey.
