Got this error message once yesterday and twice today:

"An unknown response was received in response to a request for information
from the news server 'news.eternal-september.org'.

400 Too many connections from your IP address

Configuration:
Account: news.eternal-september.org
Server: news.eternal-september.org"

Then a minute later tried again, no problem, posts downloaded . . .

Any idea what's going on?

I get it every now and then on mine. That's generally due to having lost a
connection, then reconnecting a minute or so later. So now the server is
seeing a second connection.

Luckily with my service, I can go in and terminate the active sessions.

Two possibilities:
1. you're in an office and multiple people aren't working. <g>
(sharing same IP through the office router)
2. your email client/newsreader is set to use a high number of
connections. Reduce it to two.

Maybe three... the server was busy for a moment...

Unfortunately, you were allowed to connect.
Not enough work to keep you busy today?

Not sure, but if you ask in the eternal-september.support
group, Ray Banana will probably explain it to you.

The OP is posting here using Outlook Express. I don't recall that there is
a setting in OE that lets you specify the maximum number of concurrent
connections. Since you can't control the max number of connections made by
OE, it could attempt to establish more than the NNTP server permits. I
thought OE had a limit of 4 NNTP connections but I can't find documentation
to verify.

For eternal-september, the max concurrent connection limit is 4.

Gray's anatomy doesn't seem to have a definition of your type.

Hello Mr. Connor. You'll have to do better than that if you want to shut
down Ray's server.
