Adhoc network wont reconnect unless computers restarted.

I have an adhoc wireless network set up like so:

internet---desktop )))) (((( Laptop

This works fine, but if the laptop either disconnects from the network due
to signal loss or is simply turned off, then it wont reconnect unless I
restart the desktop pc.

How can I fix this problem?
