Hello Folks
A friend of mine who lives in Canada and I are both Musicians, we want
to share files etc, some more than 100 meg but not much, I have Windows 7 or
will have by tomorrow evening and what I want to do is find a way or
software so that he can take and leave files on my PC or a folder on my PC,
I know my way around a pc enough to sort problems out etc sometimes with a
little help from a Newsgroup like this one but how to set something like
this up is a little beyond me, there are 7 PC/Laptops in this house, some
wireless and some not, I set it all up and keep it running, not that it
takes much doing, if that gives you some idea of my limited knowledge, I am
hoping someone could send me in the right direction?

Thanks

Gordon B

Hi Again
Before anyone suggests Website or something like Hotfile, I made a website
and then found VM only give 55meg to use so that was a none started, Hotfile
and sites like that cost and I was hoping not to have to pay, I think there
must be a better cheaper way.

Thanks

I would do it with a website which was liberal in its allowances.

Badongo allows max size 2G, max daily dl 12G -- for free registered
users, somewhat different for free unregistered and pay premium.

The wiki's article on file hosting services compares a number of them
which have over a gig filesize limit.

I think that would be more convenient than setting up some kind of FTP
on your own systems.

Take a look at TeamViewer at http://www.teamviewer.com - free for personal
use and lets you transfer files and much more.

It's very new, and I haven't tried it, but Opera's "Unite" (still in
'beta') might interest you. You don't have to use any 'third party'
servers.

Or you could do the 'old fashioned' thing and set up conventional web or
ftp or gopher servers on your own systems - but that is more than a
little techy if you want to get it right and keep out uninvited users.

Another 'old fashioned' approach is to get a 'shell account' (probably
requires Unix/Linux knowledge); for the volumes of data you're considering
that will probably not be 'free', but you do get the advantage of not
having to keep your own system on line all the time you want others to
have access to your files. See eg <http://sdf-eu.org/index.cgi?access>.

HFS (HTTP File Server)

What is it?
.... it's file sharing
.... it's webserver
.... it's open source
.... it's free
.... it's guaranteed to contain no malware

Features
# Download and upload
# Virtual file system
# Highly customizable
# HTML template
# Bandwidth control
# Easy/Expert mode
# Log
# Full control over connections
# Accounts
# Dynamic DNS updater

You can use HFS (HTTP File Server) to send and receive files.

It's different from classic file sharing because it uses web technology to
be more compatible with today's Internet.

It also differs from classic web servers because it's very easy to use and
runs "right out-of-the box".

Access your remote files, over the network.

You could use something like UltraVNC and set it up to
use Windows log in permissions and then create an account
for him on the machine containing the shared files. Then
only allow access for that user to the folders that contain
the files you want to share. You'd have to set up port
forwarding on the router. He would have to know your ip
address or you could use a dynamic DNS service like no-ip.com
or dyndns.com.
