Default Need help with wireless router issues PLEASE!!!!!

Alright, when it comes to computers I am a stone cold idiot!!!

I have a HP desktop with XP SP2 and a HP laptop with XP SP2. Both have
wireless cards and I have DSL through SBC/Yahoo (DSL modem). I purchased a D
links DI-524 wireless router and I am stuck trying to build my home network.
I have tried following the intructions with the D Links but after I connect
it, the internet will not work. The only way I can access the internet at the
moment is if I unplug the router and plug the ether net plug from the modem
into the desktop.
I want to share files, and the printer with both and I would like the freedom
of being on the internet while my wife is taking her online classes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Do you have the 5100 modem? It has a setting to do the PPPoE itself or let
the router do it. The recommended way is to let the router do the PPPoE so
set it up that way. You need to be connected directly to the modem to set
it that way, but then you can set up your network that way most of the how
tos explain.

You need a wired connection to the modem.

Use a web browser and type 192.168.0.1 in the address

From the modem setup page go to Advanced, PPP Location, and select PPP on
Computer.

Save changes and go back to the main page. While you are here, check what
speeds are showing for your connection. Should be 1536 or 3008 download and
384 or 512 upload. If these are different, let me know.

Now redo you normal setup and use the router to do the PPPoE part. Now your
router is your gateway, and your DHCP server. All four of the connections
or however many wireless should work the same.

Ok, I now have the router working fine with the desktop. I can open up
explorer fine were as I could not before. THANK YOU!!!

I now have a new problem and I bet it is something simple that the computer
guru's would know but people like me are completely clueless. I go through
the "set up a home network" wizard and set that all up but my new laptop says
it can not find any networks within range, it is sitting three feet away from
the router! When I go on business trips, I have no problems finding the
hotels wireless network and connecting.

Any thoughts, suggestions? maybe I am just overlooking something simple.

thanks for your help everyone.
