I found a post that might be interesting to you. There was a message
as in your case and finally they got it fixed by installing .NET 1.1
SP1 and 3.5 SP1. Note, they also recommend to clean Temp files.

Looks strange but it will be interesting to see if it helps... Maybe
the problem is VS.NET you've uninstalled.

No chance. It doesn't accept even 2.0sp1 ou 2.0sp2 for the same
reason: .NET 2.0 is not installed!!!

I Reinstalled .net 2.0, reinstalled every service packs from previous
versions, used the .NET correction tool and it still say .NET 2.0 is
missing ...

I don't know about VS.NET. Do I have it installed? I can't find it in
installed programs. Probably I removed it meanwhile.

Still using Install Cleanup Utility I found some "SQL Improvement"
software still installed not shown in Add/Remove programs. I removed
it (I don't need SQL for visible future).

Still, an error occurred ... .NET Framework 2.0a is not installed.

What about this "a", 2.0"a"? Cause I can't see 2,o referred as "a"
anywhere.

After your five days of trying, it looks like taking a complete backup and
then re-installing the OS is going to be the faster option compared to
trying to fix it.

I can't find anything about "a" at the end. Probably, it refers to a
service pack for .net. It's really a mess... I know you already tried
everything, I am also out of ideas now. The only option here is to go
through the registry and delete all what referred to .net. Perhaps,
there is an orphaned registry value that causing .net setup to get
confused.

I have 5 versions of .net on my box and everything is working like a
charm
