changing characters on keyboard

Hi. There are many times when I am working in MS Word (2000) and on their own my special characters change and a ":" may become a (?), etc. The only letters that change are the y and the z flip flop. If I reboot my computer then everything goes back to normal but then can happen at ANY TIME again. PLEASE HELP as this is becoming very frustrating!!
