I don't know how your computer connects to the Internet.
On mine, I have a wired router and wired ADSL service.
I use a packet sniffer, when I have a puzzle to solve that
involves networking and remote devices. The tool I use
is called Wireshark.

What the display shows, is any packets sent by your computer, or
any packets coming back as an answer, from a remote device. For
example, when you send your userid and password to Yahoo, the
yahoo machine may have some unique response, that would tell
you whether the login was accepted.
I use Wireshark, for figuring out why my newsgroup reader isn't working.
And occasionally, for other kinds of network problems. Or, even to
watch my Firefox browser, and all the wacky web sites it visits for
all the advertising. If there is going to be a browser hijacking,
checking the entries in Wireshark later, may indicate where the
infection came from.
In the menu "View:Name Resolution:Enable For Network Layer", you can
turn on that tick box, before you start capturing packets. When
you use the Capture:Interfaces item, one of the entries will look
more "realistic" and have an IP address you recognize from the way
you've set up your network. You click the Start button there, to
start capturing packets.
Anyway, that is a tool that can help you figure it out.
For example, when my newsserver is screwed up, I can see
the userid and password go to the server, and then the server
just sits there for a minute or two and nothing happens. From
that, I can tell the server is broken, and isn't likely to be
serving me anything. I can then switch news servers and try
another one. In that case, I might see more of the normal things
coming from that server. So Wireshark is handy for checking
whether anything good is happening.
