I am currently using Window XP Home SP3 and Outlook Express 6 as my newsreader. I have four news servers set up at present. The number of messages shown on each server varies, but *none* have " .. a couple of thousand posts"! I'll list what are currently showing for the 'microsoft.public.test.here' groups. news.aioe.org 121 news.eternal-september.org 418 msnews.microsoft.com 25 news.microsoft.com 25 How many posts do you see in that newsgroup please? (and which newserver are you using?) I'd appreciate your response. Thank you -- Dave ~BD~ |

Thanks! microsoft.public.test.here news.Individual.net 4176 messages nntp.charter.net says there are too many messages to retrieve (thats a lot of messages) -- http://genypost.com/2009/07/dont-look-down/ Pennywise@DerryMaine.Gov |

Thank you groups.google.com http://groups.google.com/group/micro...topics?lnk=srg has 16906 posts. That's probably the best known usenet archive (they bought dejanews.com which was among the first if I recall correctly). Being able to post and track reading there is a relatively new feature (though it's been around for years too). As you've noticed, the expiration policies of various nntp providers vary, but archives pretty much never forget. -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ Todd H. |

FYI, I set up 'news.Individual.net' in Outlook Express. Although I was advised that 'Authorisation' was needed to download messages, OE6 did report that there were 4203 messages not yet downloaded, much in line with what you mentioned. Does one have to subscribe (pay) to use the service? -- Dave ~BD~ |

I appreciate it. On the two 'Microsoft' servers I currently have loaded in Outlook Express 6 as newsreaders - msnews.microsoft.com and news.microsoft.com there are now just 14 messages being shown. There are '0' - Zero - 'test' messages. All that are showing are posts from either myself or PF. Can you explain that? I'm very confused! -- Dave ~BD~ |

Individual.net cost 10 eruo (around 13 bucks U.S.) a year, and carry text only groups. They would only work with clickandbuy for me to pay thru, now it reads paypal or other avenues are acceptable. I don't send money, they just charge the credit card. I get a receipt once a year as email. Charter.net is free in that I only pay for internet access. The newsgroups aren't advertised, have a high retention rate, and carry a fairly decent amount of groups. -- http://genypost.com/2009/07/dont-look-down/ Pennywise@DerryMaine.Gov |
